Noise When Shifting

Most everyone likes to listen to the radio when they are driving in their car. However, you may want to turn the volume down every once in awhile and listen to your car. One sign that you need to take your car to the shop is unusual noises when your car shifts. If you have an automatic transmission, make sure you listen to any thudding when your car shifts for you. With a manual, it is going to be important to listen as well. Listen to the way your transmission is shifting at least once a day.

Shift Failure

If you are trying to shift and there is a delay or it fails to actually catch for a bit, you need to take your car in immediately. There is something wrong with your transmission. The reason that you should take it in immediately is that your car is no longer safe to drive. If you are needing to downshift to slow down and your transmission is not allowing you to downshift, you could be in a lot of trouble. If you notice that you are not able to shift gears or that, when you do shift, it takes a moment for the gears to catch, a mechanic is necessary.

Transmission Fluid

It is going to be important that you check under your car each time you drive it. This is just a good idea in general as you may be leaking any number of fluids, However, if you notice that you have a bright red, red, or brownish fluid under your car, you are leaking transmission fluid. You may also notice that the fluid has a smoky or burnt smell to it. This is another sign that your transmission is in dire need of some repairs. Do not hesitate to take your car in when your transmission is on the line.
